Pegasus performed a concert of music by two of the masters of twentieth century church music – Herbert Howells and Frank Martin. The pieces reflect the journey of the soul from earthly cares to heavenly joys. The programme included personal responses from Howells to two deaths – that of his beloved son, which led to the outpouring of grief in his sublime Requiem, and that of President John F. Kennedy. The latter’s death inspired the composer to write his expressive setting of ‘Take Him Earth for Cherishing’. Next, Pegasus performed Frank Martin’s stunning Mass for Double Choir, which is considered a vocal tour de force.
This 60 minute concert was part of the teatime recital series at the atmospheric church of St.George’s, a Hawksmoor design, near the British Museum.
