Bach’s Easter Oratorio in Tilford

Saturday, June 20, 2026, 7:30pm

We return to Tilford Bach Festival to perform JS Bach’s Easter Oratorio and Cantata 21: Ich hatte viel Bekummernis.

Bach’s Easter Oratorio is unlike any of his other great sacred works.
Rather than a narrator telling the story, four biblical characters step forward through a series of vivid recitatives and arias, creating a work of remarkable immediacy and emotional power.
Performed by the London Handel Players, Pegasus and an outstanding team of soloists, Hilary Cronin (soprano), Hugh Cutting, (alto) Sam Boden (tenor), and Edward Grint (bass), and directed by Adrian Butterfield. This promises to be one of the highlights of the Festival.

Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil (Vespers)

Often called the “greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church,” Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is far more than just a concert—it is the last, glorious echo of a world that was about to vanish forever. Composed in 1915 on the brink of revolution, this unmeasured masterpiece weaves a breathtaking tapestry of the human voice: basses anchoring the earth with impossibly deep notes, altos and tenors weaving the rich history of ancient chant, and sopranos rising above it all like pure, shimmering light.
