A concert of sacred music ranging from the sixteenth century to our own, and from Britain across Europe. The first half of our programme centres on Allegri’s Miserere, his famous setting of Psalm 51. We contrast it with a version by Sir James MacMillan, one of Britain’s foremost contemporary choral composers, which treats the same text in a movingly expressive way. The second part of the concert presents anthems in praise of the Virgin Mary, from English and French Renaissance motets by Parsons and Mouton to the lush Romanticism of Rachmaninov and Franz Biebl. We end with the exuberance of the Estonian composer Urmas Sisask, and William Byrd’s Laudibus in Sanctis.
The concert is conducted by Matthew Altham and is presented as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London Spring Series, at the beautiful church of St Botolph Without Bishopsgate, close to Liverpool Street Station.
Tickets: £18 adults/£5 children (unreserved seating), £23 (premium seating).
