Bach composed the sections of his Mass in B minor over a period of a quarter of a century. It was not performed complete in his lifetime yet its varied movements comprise a sacred drama as involving as his great settings of the Passion. Even today, the Mass remains one of the supreme challenges for choirs, soloists and orchestras – a many-faceted work of contrapuntal mastery, lyrical intimacy and uplifting grandeur.
Pegasus returned to St John’s with director Adrian Butterfield, whose performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at St John’s Smith Square in 2015 was described by one reviewer as “the most perfectly performed musical experience in many years” (musicOMH).
