A concert of exciting and imaginative works by two great composers of the eighteenth century. Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum was written in 1743 in celebration of King George II’s victory over French forces at Dettingen, in present-day Bavaria. The king was present for the first performance at St James’s Palace in London.
J.S. Bach’s Ascension Oratorio (Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen, BWV 11) was composed in 1735, a year after his Christmas Oratorio, for performance in Leipzig, and it shares the lavish orchestration and joyful atmosphere of the earlier work.
Pegasus and orchestra are conducted by Matthew Altham.
